Optical access networks are quickly evolving mainly encouraged by 5G/6G technologies. Competition and regulation force operators to keep their networks updated but at lowest cost. This presentation will introduce models, implementation aspects and evaluation results of new planning methods for future converged access networks. These new methods consider critical design parameters of the different technologies (e.g., capacity, transmission distance, fan out), targeted area characteristics (e.g., existing infrastructure, optical network unit expected locations, requested bandwidth and reliability per location) as well as parameters for optimization (e.g., performance, efficiency, power consumption). The outcome of the talk is to understand the complexity of access network planning and the most important cost drivers.     «
