Review of the main propagation equations for space-division multiplexing: multimode nonlinear Schrödinger equation and Manakov equations. Both linear and nonlinear effects are considered. The scaling of the nonlinear Manakov coefficients with the number of modes is also discussed, with the relative implications on signal-to-noise ratio for GN-models.
