Understanding cellular complexity and function is an incredibly impor- tant, exciting and dynamic area of research. This includes studying a diverse array of processes related to cell structure, growth, division, dif- ferentiation and death, as well as identifying the various cellular signalling processes and pathways critical for the coordination of multicellular plant growth and development. Since they cannot escape unfavourable condi- tions, sessile plants must constantly adapt to their environment. Their high degree of developmental plasticity requires the ability to rapidly sense and respond to changing environmental conditions. For plant cells to function, both cell-autonomously and in the tissue context, the various response mechanisms must be coordinated, adapted, and combined through crosstalk strategies to elicit meaningful responses.
