The aim of the MAP Cluster is to develop new, coherent light sources and laser-driven particle sources with unprecedented properties. These include extremely short pulse rates, enormous intensities and gargantuan energies. The new light sources open the door to a wide array of novel interdisciplinary applications in physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. The picture shows Prof. Reinhard Kienberger, who, in his laboratory, generates laser pulses of only a few attoseconds that can be used to take snapshots of the insides of atoms.
