In summary, identification of filtration-inhibiting substances in diatomaceous earth precoat and membrane filtration with a focus on the impact of β-glucans was part of this thesis. In this context, effect of polymer geometry and origin of β-glucans (derived from yeast or barley) as well as influence of additional beer ingredients, more accurate medium-chain-fatty-acid ethyl esters, could be investigated. Using locally-resolved image analysis, membrane clogging could be described in more detail and the reason for a drop in membrane filter performance could be identified.
