Abstract:
Spreading of fine (D50 ≤ 20 μm) powders into thin layers, such as required by layer-wise additive manufacturing (AM) processes, typically requires a mechanism such as a roller that provides adequate shear and compression to overcome the cohesive forces between particles. We explore improved, roller-based spreading strategies for highly cohesive powders using an integrated discrete element-finite element (DEM-FEM) framework. We find that optimal roller-based spreading, quantified by maximum packi...     »
