In this thesis, the concept of a gasoline fueled pre-chamber ignition system is investigated on a single cylinder research engine to assess its efficiency and emission potential. For this purpose, an optimized system was developed which, in addition to the use of the latest state of the art injection and ignition technology, is characterized by the integration of modern measurement technology. Investigations on the thermodynamic and the optical configuration of the engine were carried out to gain insight into the combustion process and therefore to evaluate its potential for a future series application.
