The basis of the present study was to screen and to evaluate lactobacilli from the perspectives of specific needs in breweries and in the context of modern taxonomic aspects. For that purpose lactobacilli were gathered from samples of the brewing process and characterized according to classical methods. This revealed four new lactobacillus species. They were confirmed by genotyping and, to put those data in a scientific context, the new lactobacilli are considered in the current constructions of phylogenic trees.
