Nitric oxide is an important signaling molecule in plants. This work revealed a new function of NO as an inhibitor of HDAC activity, probably by direct S-nitrosylation of HDAC complexes. This mechanism might play a role during the plant´s stress response to enhance transcription of stress-related genes by inducing histone acetylation at the corresponding loci. This work provides a mechanistic insight into stress-mediated alterations of histone-acetylation and demonstrates that NO regulates transcription not only by modifying transcription factors but also by modulating the chromatin structure.
