A Review on the Mechanization of Sugar Cane Harvesting in Brazil

In recent years, the demand of renewable energy has steadily increased. The cultivation of sugarcane as a source of energy supports the production of ethanol. A distinction between green and burned cane harvesting reveals general differences in existing harvest methods and clarifies the necessity of mechanized harvesting. This paper provides a detailed description of the mechanized concept and a holistic view of the entire harvesting chain, enabling a deep understanding of the operating principles. A comparison between Australian and Brazilian regions of cultivation explains differences and emphasizes strengths as well as weaknesses of the current system within the use on Brazilian sugarcane fields. This work aims to give an overview about the currently used mechanized sugarcane harvesting techniques in Brazil and their associated issues, thereby contributing to potential improvements.     «
