Downsizing and Downspeeding are approaches to increase the efficiency of internal combustion engines. Unfortunately, these concepts amplify torsional oscillations of the drive train due to an increased non-uniformity of the indicated engine torque. Conventional passive torsional damping systems like the very common Dual Mass Flywheel reach their limits under these tightened circumstances. This article introduces a new, energy efficient active damping system. The structure and functionality are explained and a hardware prototype is presented.
