Today’s factory planning relies on the methods and tools of the Digital Factory to meet shortened product life cycles and the resulting demand for fast and flexible reengineering. However, the Digital Factory and the real production plants are often not consistent, due to incomplete or missing digital data. Augmented Reality can serve as an intuitive interface here. The technology combines real and virtual information by integrating virtual planning data seamlessly with views of the real factory.
This work presents the path of exploration, development and testing on the way to a productive application of Augmented Reality for factory planning. Two crucial requirements for success are discussed: accuracy and process support for registration between real and digital world. The developed system has already been successfully applied to many industrial planning problems.
