In this work, substitution effects in alkali metal silicides and germanides as precursors for novel Si-, Ge-, and B-based materials are investigated. By cation substitution, the first Zintl anion with an O
2-analogous dimer was obtained in Li
3NaGe
2. Substitution reactions in the anionic substructure afforded mixed-anionic Zintl phases and the use of templates species led to an open, anionic boron framework. The discovered compounds are discussed as Li ion conductors or as precursors for novel semiconductor materials.
