Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play a key role in atherogenesis and the initiation of acute myocardial infarction. The protein Extracellular Matrix Metalloproteinase Inducer was previously characterized in tomour biology and is capable of inducing matrix metalloproteinases. The regulation of EMMPRIN and MT1-MMP on the cell surface of monocytes was examined in 20 patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI). Furthermore, plasma activity of MMP-9 was measured. It was shown that cell surface expression of EMMPRIN and MT1-MMP as well as MMP-9 activity were significantly increased in acute MI. Thus, EMMPRIN might have an etiologic impact on atherogenesis and plaque rupture.
