In this work, novel test benches were developed to characterize lithium-ion pouch cells under various mechanical operating conditions. Utilizing these test benches, two different pouch cell configurations were examined under external mechanical compression with regard to performance, cycle-life, and swelling. The results are put into context with commercial cylindrical cells. In addition to the mechanical behavior, various thermal operating strategies were evaluated aiming at improved fast-charging behavior of cylindrical cells.
