Extracellular vesicle (EV) associated microRNAs (miRNAs) are shuttled during pathological processes. After evaluating EV isolation for analyzing EV miRNAs by next-generation sequencing, arterial and venous EV miRNA profiles were compared for their joint applicability. Finally, EV miRNAs were studied as biomarkers for the early detection of community-acquired pneumonia and sepsis as a severe secondary complication. Furthermore, EV-miRNAs were investigated as regulators in the pathophysiology of COVID-19.
