The car driver can be supported in a remarkable way by additional information inside and outside the vehicle. Navigation, route guidance, and traffic message systems are only selected examples. In addition, comfort and infotainment systems increase the car's functionality. This must not lead to increased driver distraction but should make driving easier, more efficient, and safer. According to this, guidelines and standards were published that address the development of ergonomically optimized in-vehicle human--machine interaction (HMI) and the assessment of driver distraction using digital human models or experimental procedures. A stringent application of this knowledge and methodology will help to avoid negative side effects while introducing additional information and functionality to a complex environment.
