Within this thesis initially the pitting load capacity of through hardened spur and helical internal gears was determined in order to affirm the load capacity of the base material before nitriding. Furthermore, substantial experimental investigations into the micropitting and wear behavior of nitrided internal and external gears were carried out considering essential influences of practice-oriented manufacturing and operating conditions. Based on these results the existing calculation methods regarding the flank load carrying capacity were reviewed and a proposal for enhancement has been drawn up.
