The terms "multimedia" and "e-learning" are keywords in a modern learning culture. However, opinions as to exactly what these mean differ greatly. Against the background of mathematical learning environments, a disambiguation of these terms is sought after whereby the term "multimedia" can be divided into five components: multimediality, multicodality, multimodality, interactivity and didactic concept. Each of these components is discussed in detail.
In light of this, in a second step a concept is being developed and presented for a mathematical learning environment on the topic of symmetry which takes into account the results discussed earlier.
