In the current study the nucleic and cytoplasmatic expression of the human Y-box binding protein YB-1 was examined in advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinomas.
Dependent on the tumor grade 2, YB-1 could be suitable for risk stratification of such tumor patients regarding long- from short–term postoperative 5–year survival rate. These data based on the biggest differences the in survival rates of patients with YB-1 expression in combination with tumor grade 2 and between those with high YB-1 expression in the nucleus and cytoplasm (39%) at the invasion front. In comparison, weak nuclear YB-expression as well as no cytoplasmatic expression showed a survival rate of 73% (p=0,002).
The obtained data might contribute to the estimation of tumor prognosis and thus to the personalized tumor therapy of head and neck cancer.
