Topic of this thesis is the influence of the mothers' ethnicity, determined by the country of origin, on the somatic development of their babies. 1.815.318 single births from the years 1995-1997 were subject of investigation. The mother's country of origin was established according to the statement on the German birth certificate. 16,7% of all mothers turned out to be of non-German origin. The highest birth weights were found with the babies of east-German mothers, whereas the Asian babies accounted for the lowest birth weights. With the use of a correction method, only based upon the mother's body weight and length, the classification of babies in the national German growth curve could be improved.
