Within the context of an 18-months multicenter, placebo-controlled trial evaluating the efficacy of orlistat for weight reduction, the eating behaviour of the patients has been analyzed. Patients taking orlistat showed a higher loss in weight than those receiving placebo. Compared to the placebo group the average energy intake of the orlistat group turned out to be slightly higher. By raising the proportion of carbohydrates and by lowering the proportion of fat in the daily energy intake, patients taking placebo were able to achieve a higher reduction of body weight. However this observation did not prove to be valid for patients receiving orlistat. Compared to the placebo group, patients in the orlistat group were able to increase the daily intake of energy, fat and carbohydrates without endangering weight reduction or maintenance.
