Expanded perlite is a highly porous aluminosilicate powder. By means of evacuation and addition of an infrared opacifier, it is possible to achieve exceptionally low thermal conductivities, for example 0.013 W/mK at 400 °C mean temperature, with expanded perlite. For the development of a highly efficient high-temperature vacuum powder insulation for industrial applications, the heat transport within pure and opacified perlite powder is investigated experimentally and theoretically at temperatures between 20 °C and 800 °C, and at gas pressures between 0.01 Pa and 100 kPa.
