Infection rates after elective cranial procedures were compared before and after the implementation of additional infection-prevention measures. These measures consisted of five components: (1) additional training and education of staff, (2) preoperative usage of an antiseptic shampoo containing Octenidine dihydrochloride, (3) no preoperative administration of glucocorticoids, (4) preoperative disinfection of the surgical area conducted two times, (5) skin closure conducted with glue instead of staples.
After the implementation of these measures, the trend towards a reduction of postoperative infection rates of 50 % (4% vs. 2%) could be observed.
