Based on rhenium(I/V) precursors several synthetic pathways to water soluble but at the same time stable rhenium complexes ligated with N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) suitable for radiopharmaceutical application are presented and the evaluation of literature known Re NHC complexes is conducted.
