Various organic liquid scintillators were experimentally studied with respect to their response to proton recoils. The measurements were performed at the Maier-Leibnitz-Laboratorium using a pulsed beam of monoenergetic neutrons. Different incident neutron energies between 4.7 and 11.2 MeV could be selected kinematically. The energy dependent light output for protons was extracted from the neutron-proton recoil spectra. It was found to follow the prediction of the Birks quenching model. Furthermore, the performance for discrimination of gamma and neutron induced events via their characteristic scintillation pulse shapes was studied.
