This study develops a systemic model of communicative planning methods. It applies this model in two empirical investigations, namely, a meta-analysis of recent planning literature and a case study of the development of Munich’s “Creative Quarter“. The empirical work of this study reveals three areas for optimisation to enhance the effectiveness of spatial planning processes, first, the choice and interaction of planning methods’ basic building blocks, second, the temporal interplay of different communicative planning methods, and third, critical variables that shape – as part of overall framework conditions – the effects of communicative planning methods.
