An Investigation of 4809 Odorant Receptors (OR) from 8 species showed that over 98 % of all OR are equipped with at least 1 of 14 highly conserved short amino acid motifs, known as transport motifs in other proteins, and suggests their functional impact for functional OR studies in a specifically developed luminescence-based bioassay. In high-throughput screens, new agonists for 8 OR were identified and characterized. Additionally, this thesis points to the outstanding role of key food odorants for the human OR-ligand space.
