The extreme strain of marathon running causes a dilation of the retinal arterioles and venules. The AVR goes up immediately after the marathon strain due to greater arteriolar dilation. In the follow-up one day after the marathon a significantly higher AVR was found, which can be explained by greater reactive venular constriction during the regeneration phase. The study of the adaptation of the microcirculation to extreme acute strain (marathon running) showed a high dependency of the vascular diameters on the time in the marathon and the blood pressure (central and peripheral).
