The purpose of this study was to characterize cells originating from the vitreous space: hyalocytes, cells from the ciliary epithelium and cells from the retinal pigment epithelium.
No cell-specific markers for these cells had previously been identified. We tested three commercially available antibodies and two antibodies specifically produced for our research. Tests were conducted on different cell cultures and on parrafined tissues to establish specific cell characteristics. In addition, by staining with alcian blue, we demonstrated a fast and feasible method of identifying these cells based on their production of extra-cellular matrix. We were able to demonstrate that changes in cellular characteristics during growth-phases were often accompanied by changes of the antigenic properties in accordance with the current state of differentiation and function of the cells.
