Our retrospective study compares the clinical and radiographic outcomes of two groups each, containing 40 knees that were either treated with unconstraint or hinged total knee arthroplasty (TKA). We were able to show that unconstraint TKA achieves significantly better subjective (VAS, patient satisfaction) and objective (KSS, SF-36) results. The radiographic evaluation showed no significant difference. In general there is a distinct loss of quality of life after TKA compared to a healthy population, no matter what type or model is used. Thus, especially with the use of hinged TKA strict indication and thorough informed consent is essential in achieving a sufficient result.
