Isabella Bertmann’s PhD thesis deals with the living conditions of persons with disabilities in South Africa. The thesis addresses the interrelations between quality of life, poverty reduction, and social inclusion. By drawing on qualitative interviews, which were conducted in South Africa and used as primary data, concrete links between social protection measures and quality of life are analyzed and discussed. The interviews reveal further factors that have an influence on the multidimensional experiences of poverty and deprivation. Amartya Sen’s “Capability Approach”—also the basis for the Human Development Index—is used as the theoretical framework.     «

Die Dissertation von Isabella Bertmann befasst sich mit der Lebenssituation von Menschen mit Behinderungen in Südafrika. Es geht um den Zusammenhang von Lebensqualität, Armutsbekämpfung und gesellschaftlicher Inklusion. Unter Rückgriff auf qualitative Interviews, die als Primärdaten im Rahmen des Promotionsvorhabens erhoben und ausgewertet wurden, werden konkrete Verbindungen zwischen sozialen Sicherheitsmechanismen und Lebensqualität analysiert und theoriebasiert diskutiert. Aus den Interviews lassen sich weitere Faktoren erschließen, die einen Einfluss auf multidimensionale Erfahrungen von Armut und Benachteiligung haben. Als theoretischer Bezugsrahmen dient der von Amartya Sen und anderen entwickelte „Capability Approach“, der auch die Grundlage für den Human Development Index darstellt.     «
