In this thesis a vibrating coil magnetometer (VCM) for measuring the dc-magnetisation at milli-Kelvin temperatures was delveloped and built. This magnetometer is operated in combination with a dilution refrigerator, that was renovated and modified during the thesis. The quantum phase transition in the Ising ferromagnet LiHoF4 was studied using the VCM. The measurements show a broadening of the phase transition due to thermal broadening of nuclear fluctuations. The pyrochlor oxide Tb2Ti2O7 was studied with the VCM to find evidence for a theretically proposed quantum spin ice behaviour. No evidence for such a spin ice could be found.
