In this study, solid base catalysts on the basis of Mg-Al mixed oxides and modified ceria have been developed. The strength of the basic properties was varied by the chemical composition. The basicity was significantly enhanced by the modification with fluoride anions and zinc cations. Similar to the modification with anions and cations of Mg-Al mixed oxides, the basic properties of ceria were enhanced by the deposition of Au-particles. These particles block selectively strong Lewis acidic Ce(IV) cations. Via reduction of the support and oxidation of Au-particles the hydride abstraction in the elimination reaction of alcohols was mostly influenced.
