This dissertation is a cross sectional analysis of the health- related quality of life (HRQOL) and therapy-related symptoms after multimodal treatment of local advanced rectal carcinoma. 192 patients meeting the criteria for the observation were treated at the Clinic of Radiotherapy and Oncology of the Klinikum Rechts der Isar, Technical University of Munich in the period between 1995 and 2005.
Health related quality of life, symptoms and adverse effects associated to the therapy were registered for these 192 persons by means of validated instruments and evaluated statistically afterwards.
Results: In General, HRQOL after multimodal therapy is good and can be compared to the HRQOL of the coeval general population. There is a strong correlation between certain health- and therapy-related variables and the long-term- HRQOL on the other hand.
Notably, intestinal symptoms result in an impairment of quality of life.
In how far there can be draught consequences for future therapeutic approaches must be found out in further studies.
