Evoked potentials derived from EEG recording permit to draw conclusions from the different components of drug effects. Based on data from a volunteer study it has been shown that subanaesthetic concentrations of propofol or remifentanil reduce amplitudes of pain evoked potentials. At the same time MLAEP latencies, as an indicator of sedation, remain constant. This indicates antinociceptive effects even with propofol alone. Furthermore, qualitative different effects on visceral and somatic pain have been shown for both drugs. These results represent a step forward towards quantification of analgesic drug effects.
