Functional imaging with positron emission tomography using the tracer 3´-[18F]fluoro-3´-deoxythymidine ([18F]FLT) reflects cellular proliferation, a hallmark of malignant lymphoma. In a murine study, a correlation between decrease of [18F]FLT uptake in tumor tissue and histopathologic and immunohistologic changes early after chemotherapy has been found. In addition in a clinical study, a comparison between therapy evaluation with [18F]FLT-PET early after chemotherapy and therapy evaluation using conventional imaging has been done. This study showed, that [18F]FLT represents a sensitive surrogate marker for early prediction of therapy response in malignant lymphoma.
