Aim of the present study was to investigate the occurrence of cerebral embolic events during percutaneous angioplasty of carotid artery stenosis. Therefore, the microembolic signals in the transcranial Doppler during the intervention were measured and their importance for the emergence of neurological and neuropsychological changes as well as the appearance of lesions in the diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging was analysed. Furthermore, the influence of the cardiovascular risk-profile and the medical treatment with HMG-CoA-reductace-inhibitors was examined.
The study shows that the medical treatment as well as certain cardiovascular risk parameters influenced the number of microemboli. However, the number of microemboli did not correlate significantly with clinical disorders or lesions in the diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. The study contributes to the value of measuring microemboli in patients treated for carotid artery stenosis.
