This thesis addresses the synthesis, characterization, and derivatization of organo-rare-earth metal compounds. Highly reactive peralkylated aluminate synthesis precursors allowed for the isolation of discrete organolanthanide compounds with extremely basic methyl-ligands. The use of chelating nitrogen-based ancillary ligands gave insight into complex deactivation sequences (e.g., carbon-hydrogen bond activation) of commercially used polymerization catalysts. Treatment of mixed aluminate-cyclopentadienyl complexes with fluorinated boron-reagents yielded single-component catalysts for the synthesis of trans-stereospecific polyisoprene (Gutta-Percha). Single-crystal X-ray crystallography and various NMR spectroscopic techniques have been applied to support the proposed structure-reactivity relationships.
