Melanoma Inhibitory Activity (MIA) is regarded as a promising marker for malignant melanoma. In our study, we evaluated MIA by comparing the MIA serum data of 174 patients with initially low tumor mass (TNM stages I and II) with their course of disease, individual patients being observed for up to seven years. We identified a strong connection between MIA and the clinical condition, particularly when the tumor mass is high. Therefore, MIA is suitable as a marker for the course of disease, especially in case of a high tumor mass. MIA’s suitability as a tumor marker can be improved by several point measurements and by not using a predefined threshold but instead considering each patient’s development of MIA values individually. In addition, the assessment of each patient`s individual course of MIA enables a prognosis regarding tumor progression. In particular, an increase of 0.1 ng/ml within 100 days is to be classified as critical, indicating a heightened risk for metastatic disease.
