In the prospective study the donor-site morbidity after harvesting rib cartilage for autogenous ear reconstruction has been investigated at overall 46 cases. It has been proven that functional deficits at the donor-site have been of temporary nature only. The preliminary weakened muscle groups of all patients recovered rapidly. Aesthetic losings in the form of contour irregularities at the chest wall have been observed merely at very slender and young patients, furthermore the scars, which are mainly below 10 cm, represent just a minor visual restriction. Chest wall deformities occurred in no single case. Based on these results the donor-site morbidity can be rated as negligible in relation to the result of the surgery.
