The COMPASS experiment has recorded a luminosity of 1.5/fb of deep inelastic
scattering during the years 2002 to 2004 with polarized muon beam and polarized
deuteron target. The single-inclusive hadron production cross section has been
measured differentially in the transverse momentum. The corresponding double
spin asymmetry has been measured in the transverse momentum range of 1GeV/c to
3.5GeV/c, which is interpreted in the framework of an NLO QCD calculation as
evidence for a positive polarization of gluons in the nucleon. The statistical
uncertainties at low transverse momenta give hope of sensitivity to the
resolved photon spin structure, given improved theoretical calculations.
