For the development of complex products, e.g. automobiles, design and simulation are of particular importance. Thus, highly specialized processes have to be integrated for efficient collaboration and communication. Based upon different analyses conducted by the author in industry, a model and related proceeding of five dimensions of integration was developed, considering product architecture, human actors, tools, data and process. An integration of the different views on the product has been achieved by the mapping of components and functions using a domain mapping matrix. Based upon the definition of modules within that structure, pointing out specific data and information for design and simulation, a method to improve communication regarding efficient transfer of data and information is designed. Scenarios for the further use of the resulting component-loadcase-matrix to improve communication are lined out, proposing among others function-oriented teams and modules for information-exchange. The transfer into industry showed promising results for efficient collaboration and coordination in virtual product development.
