Kurzfassung:
Isabella Bertmann’s PhD thesis deals with the living conditions of persons with disabilities in South Africa. The thesis addresses the interrelations between quality of life, poverty reduction, and social inclusion. By drawing on qualitative interviews, which were conducted in South Africa and used as primary data, concrete links between social protection measures and quality of life are analyzed and discussed. The interviews reveal further factors that have an influence on the multidimensional experiences of poverty and deprivation. Amartya Sen’s “Capability Approach”—also the basis for the Human Development Index—is used as the theoretical framework.
