Subway suicides of Munich were compared with the general suicides of the same region during a 20 year period. Also the question was examined whether there is a possibility to reduce the number of subway suicides by a moratorium with the local press. The data originates from the accident file of the Munich transporting enterprises (n=334) as well as from the cause of death statistics of the Bavarian national office for statistics. The sex distribution of Munic subway suicides is shifted to the disadvantage of the women and also the people who commit suicide by subway are significantly younger than those of the general suicide statistics. The evaluation of the subway suicide prevention project could not show a decrease of the number of absolute suicides (n=16) during the duration of study. But the suicides defined as subsequent cases removed around 15% (p=0,372) in the comparison to the previous year. Because suicides are an important cause of mortality especially for humans in younger age groups, it is urgent necessary to apply prevention measures to anticipate these suicides.
