In this work, scanning probe microscopy (SPM) was used to analyze battery materials. Combining SPM with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, it was shown how the addition of water to ionic liquids increases their electrochemical double layer (EDL) capacitance. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies of polyoxometalates showed the dependence of their adsorption on their oxidation state and how different anions and cations in the solution influence the adsorption. Furthermore, a study of scanning electrochemical potential microscopy showed the influence of the EDL structure on the images and found a common image artifact to be caused by the feedback loop.
