Nonlinear continuum scale modeling techniques are employed to investigate the process of cake filtration. First, a simple model is proposed to quickly evaluate experimental cake filtration data. Possibly occurring statistical errors are analyzed using a Monte Carlo method. Second, a complex model to predict filter aid cake filtration processes is developed. An optimal control problem is solved under consideration of said model. In addition, a model order reduction is performed for the latter model.
