Abstract:
A holistic study assessing hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) as fuel-upgrading technology for residual biomass was carried out. The impact of HTC on fuel quality, the resulting process water and the economic performance was analyzed. It was shown, that HTC strongly alters the biomass composition. Most importantly energy content increases and the concentration of potassium and chlorine, elements responsible for issues in power furnaces, are reduced. For an economically viable process, waste streams providing high gate fees should be processed.
