Iron N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes are a promising class of catalysts for homogeneous epoxidation, achieving very high activities in research work. In the first part of this dissertation, several new bio-inspired iron NHC complexes are synthesized and evaluated in epoxidation. Further investigations of this thesis deal with the reactivity of iron NHC complexes. In the third part of this work, new multidentate NHC ligand systems and their Pd, Pt and Au tetracarbene complexes are synthesized for potential medical application.
