Cationic lipids condensate with DNA in aqueous solutions in mesoscopic liquid crystals.Thermodynamics and structure of those lipid-DNA condensates and their interactions with anionic polymers were investigated, using small and wide angle scattering of neutrons and x-rays, calorimetry (DSC) and freeze fracture electron microscopy. The electron density profiles where reconstructed for different mixtures of lipids and DNA inside the complexes and structural changes were measured in dependence of these molar ratios and compared to theory. Using oriented samples the existence of an orthorhombic super lattice of the intercalated DNA strands was directly verified and the order-disorder transition of this super lattice was measured as a function of DNA packing.
